Santiago saya to the marlin:
"I am sorry I went too far out. I ruined us both." What does this figuratievly mean? How does it affect the theme
of the novel?
When he says "I went to far out" Santiago figuratievly means that he pushed his limites too far this time. He shouldn't
have stepped across the line of where he knew his limitations. He also ruined the fish and himself. When he went
that far out he had pride that he could but when he couldnt do it he ruined himself. Testing his limitation
now can destroy. This affects the theme because one of the themes Hemingway makes is that man has to test his limits
even if it destroys him. Santiago has tested his limits by going out this far with a huge fish. Doing this could destroy him
but he does it anyway. Another theme this quote affected is that man can be destroyed but not defeated. It affects it because
Santiago says I ruined us both, but he does not just give up and go home. Staying out in the ocean can destroy him but he
stays because he is not defeated.
