1.      In Part 1, Bierce includes few details about the condemned man and does not reveal the reason why he is being hanged. How does this help create suspense?

This creates suspense because a man is being hanged and you don’t know why. This makes it so that you want to read and find out why he is being hanged.

  1. In what ways are the condemned man’s perceptions of time and motion distorted as he is waiting to be hanged? Why are his distorted perceptions important?

The man’s perceptions of time and motion are distorted because he sees a fast moving river then sees a piece of wood floating slowly down the stream and his watch sounds loud and slow. This is important because it shows that thhe man is not normal now.It foreshadows the vision of the man going home

  1. What seems to be the narrator’s attitude toward Farquhar in Part II? What is the narrator’s attitude toward war?

The narrators think that Farquhar is cocky and tries to be the one that saves the day, he is also patriotic. The narrators think that war is very dangerous.

  1. Considering the outcome of the story, what is ironic or surprising about Farquhar’s longing for the “larger life of a soldier?” What is ironic about the fact that Farquhar agrees with the saying that “all is fair in love and war?”

Farquhar ends up dying trying to help the south and he thought he would be a hero and burn down a bridge but he ended up dying trying to do it. It is ironic that Farquhar agrees with the saying because he thinks he is tricking the north but he was the one who really got tricked and he dies by that saying.

  1. What details in Part III suggests that Farquhar’s journey occurs in his mind? How is the journey connected with the plan of escape that occurs to him moments before he is hanged?

The details in part III suggests that his escape happens in his life because he starts to feel pain and can see things that normal people couldn’t. This is connected with the first escape plan because his perception of time and motion were not like a normal person.

  1. Explain whether you think the portrayal of Farquhar’s final thoughts and sensations is realistic.

I think it is realistic because when you are about to die you thin about your family and your relationships with them.

  1. Point of view refers to the vantage point from which the story is told.  Why is the limited third-person point of view appropriate for this story? How might the story be different if Bierce had used an omniscient third-person narrator?

The limited 3rd person point of view is appropriate because you get to see what the man’s thoughts and journeys before he dies. If Bierce used the omniscient third person the story would not be a suspenseful because you would know that Farquhar is not having that journey and that in reality he is being hung.

  1. How does Bierce’s use of flashback contribute to the effectiveness of the story?

The flash back creates more suspense because you start with the rising action and climax. This makes it so that you don’t know why this man is here or what he did. Then it starts to explain and shows you why the man is there.
